Woodwork Shop

The woodwork shop was around before The Kolbe Foundation took over. However it only served as source for corruption and to furnish the personal houses of the then management.

One of the first thing that was done was to relocate the shop to a larger building and to invest in machinery. The potential was seen for the shop to be self sufficient, not to mention that there was a severe lack of furniture within the facility and rather than buy, the push was to get it built right there.  To meet the needs of an increasing inamte poplulation, bunk beds, calssroom and office furniture, and lockers had to be built.   Other furniture and wooden fixtures are built regulary to outfit international departments and offices.

The next task was to get good honest people to manage the shop. This pertained to staff and inmates alike. A team of some 23 inmates was carefully chosen and the shop was set up.

To date, the shop serves as a classic example of a prison industry. The inmates work with minimal supervision yet upon entry to the shop, one would not know that the workers are all inmates. The quality of work is exquisite and in many ways surpass that of what is done in the public shops.

The shop has done many work for government offices and we recently totally refurbished the supreme court, magistrate court family court and a police station. We also did almost all the furniture for a new forensic lab and for out-district health centers.

Furthermore, production has been expanded to fill requests from government ministries local medical clinics, the courts, and individual staff members or visitors to make special pieces. It is not difficult to place an order for a specific woodworking job.  The resulting pieces are well made and well finished.

Placing an order for the product you see is fairly simple

1. See if you find anything from the list of product on display that you like

2. Simply call in to make an appointment with Mr. Murillo at 225-6218/6229 or 225-6191 to complete your work order and to receive additional details.
