The Wagner’s Youth Facility presently has enrolled forty-seven male youths, most eighteen years and under. We maintain the belief that everyone over the age of eighteen years are not necessarily ‘adults’ per se, hence, the facility does not solely accommodate eighteen year olds and under. The youngest male inmate at our prison is 14 years old.
The inmate population at WYF includes both remanded and convicted prisoners. Twenty-nine inmates are convicted for various crimes ranging from burglary and robbery to drug-related offences, while forty one are remanded awaiting trials, thirteen of which are for the crime of murder.
There is seven daily support staff assigned to the facility including one director, one counselor, two teachers and three prison officers. All are trained in effective rehabilitation and in offering counseling to individual inmates. In addition to that, male adult inmate teachers are also part of the rehabilitation staff, enhancing their academic classes and vocational programs. Additionally, a host of volunteers visit the facility very often to offer assistance in the line of sporting, academia and counseling therapy.
