The Medic center is temporarily located on the second floor of one of the prison-cell buildings that doubles as a clinic/hospital. It is a three-bed hospital with a mini-trauma unit, and a dental and asthma bay area.The philosophy of the Clinic is to provide inmates with quality healthcare.
The Medic Center is opened from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. There is a 24hrs EMT available for emergency services. The Center provides general medical consultation, minor surgical procedures and management of routine cases including screening and treatment.Referrals to specialist are made in cases of Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Pulmonary Tuberculosis, STIs including HIV/AIDS.The Medic Center also is responsible for patients in the ‘Special Care’ section of the Prison, offering counseling, and outreach consultations to prison cells.
The Medic Center with the support of the Ministry of Health operates one of the biggest and most successful HIV/AIDS and Pulmonary Tuberculosis projects in Belize as adjudged by the recent external PAHO evaluation team. There are currently a little over than 60 registered inmates living with HIV/AIDs/PTB at the Belize Central Prison. This number is believed to be higher as testing is voluntary.
The Special Care, a unique project of the Foundation and is home to some 60 mentally challenged inmates. The Medic center in partnership with the Mental Health Unit of the Ministry of Health provides psychiatric care and support.
The staff at the Medical Center consists of a certified Medical doctor, a certified Nurse, two Nurses’ Assistants, two EMT Technicians, one civilian EMT Technician, 2 inmate EMT Technicians, an inmate records assistant and an inmate janitor.
Although the Medic Center strives to offer quality healthcare, its greatest challenge is the acquisition of basic medical supplies.Kolbe is dependent on donations and assistance.A major donor to the Medical Center has been Word at Work Ministries; their tremendous contribution has greatly impacted the quality of healthcare at the Prison.
Below is a list of equipment that the Medical Center urgently needs and would welcome as donations:
1)Pulse Oximeter to measure oxygen saturation in patients with breathing difficulties like Asthma
2)1 Doppler machine to test the flow of blood in the arteries especially in the Diabetics
3)1 EKG machine to monitor the heart especially in patients complaining of chest pain
4)3 Standing Adult Sphygmomanometers to measure blood pressure
5)Cardiac monitor
